Our Origin Story
SQUID came to be out of a desire to create a platform both online and in physical print for emerging and established artists and writers to share their work with readers. After years of editing, designing, and formatting books for independent authors, Editor-in-Chief Lori Noel wanted to open up to a wider literary world.
Everyone deserves to hold their work in their hands. There's something magical about feeling your words or art in a tangible format. So, it was important for us to have both a regular, accessible digital publication, SQUID Online Journal, and a printed issue, SQUID Literary & Arts Magazine.

And with the idea of the tangible in mind, the name SQUID came to be. From the depths, drawn to the surface, your work in ink.

We also wanted SQUID to be well-designed and printed locally. Though submissions are open to anyone, we do our best to offer space to local creatives as much as possible. We're community-driven and also collaborate with other Montreal-based literary and creative projects and spaces. The Online Journal is always free to submit to and free to read. We open submissions for print issues twice per year.
